Samsung Galaxy eSIM Setup — One UI 6 – 7
Follow these steps to install and configure your Roaming Kiwi eSIM on a Samsung Galaxy running One UI 6 or 7 (Android 14 – 15).
Before You Start
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Your Galaxy needs an internet connection to download the eSIM profile.
- Check your software version. Go to Settings → About phone → Software information to confirm you are running One UI 6 or 7.
- Have your order email ready. Your Roaming Kiwi order confirmation contains the activation link and QR code you will need.
- Your Galaxy must be carrier-unlocked. If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, contact them to unlock it before using a third-party eSIM.
Step 1 — Install Your eSIM
Option A: One-Tap Install (recommended)
This is the fastest way to install your eSIM. Your Roaming Kiwi order confirmation email contains an activation link that works on Android 10 and later.
- 1
On your Galaxy, open the order confirmation email from Roaming Kiwi.
- 2
Tap the Install eSIM link. The Samsung eSIM installer will open automatically.
- 3
Tap Add or Confirm to install the eSIM profile.
- 4
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete activation.
Option B: Scan QR Code
If you prefer, you can scan the QR code from your order email instead.
- 1
Open Settings.
- 2
Tap Connections.
- 3
Tap SIM manager.
- 4
Tap Add eSIM.
- 5
Tap “Scan QR code from service provider”.
- 6
Point the camera at the QR code from your order email, then tap Add or Confirm.
Scan from screenshot: On Galaxy S22 and newer, you can tap the gallery icon on the QR scanning screen to select a saved screenshot of the QR code instead of scanning it with the camera.
Step 2 — Label Your New eSIM
After installation, your Galaxy will ask you to label the new SIM and set preferences for calls, texts, and data. We recommend naming it “Travel” or “Roaming Kiwi” so it is easy to identify.
Step 3 — Enable Data Roaming
Data roaming must be turned on for your Roaming Kiwi eSIM to work overseas.
- 1
Open Settings.
- 2
Tap Connections.
- 3
Tap Mobile networks.
- 4
Toggle Data roaming to on.
Note: On Samsung, the data roaming setting applies to whichever SIM is currently selected for mobile data. Make sure you have set the Roaming Kiwi eSIM as your data SIM (Step 5) before or after enabling this.
Step 4 — Set APN (if required)
Most Roaming Kiwi eSIMs configure the APN automatically. You probably do not need to do anything here. If you are not getting data after completing the other steps, set it manually:
- 1
Open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks.
- 2
Tap Access Point Names.
- 3
Tap Add or the + button. Enter the APN from your order confirmation email in the APN field, then tap the three-dot menu and Save.
If the APN fields are greyed out, the APN has been configured automatically and no action is needed.
Step 5 — Select Your Data SIM
Tell your Galaxy to use the Roaming Kiwi eSIM for mobile data.
- 1
Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
- 2
Under Preferred SIM card, tap Mobile data.
- 3
Select your Roaming Kiwi eSIM.
- 4
Turn off the “Auto data switching” toggle in SIM manager. This prevents your Galaxy from falling back to your home SIM's data.
Step 6 — Turn Off Your Home SIM
To avoid unexpected roaming charges from your home provider while overseas, turn off your home SIM entirely.
- 1
Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
- 2
Tap your home/primary SIM.
- 3
Toggle the SIM to off.
Important: With your home SIM turned off you will not receive calls or texts on your home number. Remember to turn it back on when you return home.
Troubleshooting
“No Service” after installing the eSIM
Make sure Data roaming is on (Step 3) and the Roaming Kiwi eSIM is selected for mobile data (Step 5). Try toggling Aeroplane Mode on and off, or restart your Galaxy.
Activation link does not work
Make sure you are opening the link on the Galaxy where you want to install the eSIM, not on a computer. Ensure Google Play Services is up to date. Try the QR code method instead.
QR code will not scan
Increase the screen brightness on the device displaying the QR code. On Galaxy S22 and newer, tap the gallery icon to scan from a saved screenshot. You can also tap “Enter activation code” to type the details manually.
Slow or no data connection
Check the APN settings (Step 4). Restart your Galaxy. You can check your remaining data balance at roamingkiwi.nz/usage.
Still getting charges from home provider
Your home SIM may still be active. Go back to Step 6 and make sure the SIM is fully turned off. Also check that “Auto data switching” is disabled in SIM manager.
