Device Compatibility

Not every phone that supports eSIM will work with a travel eSIM. Use this guide to understand what matters — and check your device before you buy.

🔒

Carrier Locked?

Locked phones can't use eSIMs from other providers. Contact your carrier to unlock first.

🌏

Region Variants

Chinese-market phones often have eSIM disabled even if the international model supports it.

Understanding eSIM Compatibility

Apple iPhone & iPad

iPhone XS, XS Max & XR (2018)

The first iPhones to support eSIM. These models have one physical nano-SIM slot plus one eSIM, allowing Dual SIM operation.

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR

These models can store up to 5 eSIM profiles but only use one at a time alongside the physical SIM.

iPhone 11 Series (2019)

All iPhone 11 models support eSIM with Dual SIM capability (one physical nano-SIM + one eSIM).

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Series (2020)

All iPhone 12 models support eSIM. The iPhone 12 was also the first iPhone to support Dual eSIM (two eSIM profiles active simultaneously) on some carriers.

  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13 Series (2021)

  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • iPhone 14 (US: eSIM only)
  • iPhone 14 Plus (US: eSIM only)
  • iPhone 14 Pro (US: eSIM only)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max (US: eSIM only)

iPhone 15 Series (2023)

All iPhone 15 models support eSIM. US models remain eSIM-only. International models include a nano-SIM tray plus eSIM support.

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

Can store up to 8 eSIM profiles and use 2 simultaneously. Variants sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao do not support eSIM.

iPhone 16 Series (2024)

All iPhone 16 models support eSIM, including the more affordable iPhone 16e. US models are eSIM-only; international models include a nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM.

Can store up to 8 eSIM profiles and use 2 simultaneously. Variants sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao do not support eSIM.

iPhone 17 Series & iPhone Air (2025–2026)

All of these models fully support eSIM. The iPhone Air is eSIM-only worldwide — including mainland China, making it the first iPhone sold in China with eSIM support. The other models are eSIM-only in the US, Canada, Japan, and several other markets, while retaining a nano-SIM slot in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Asia.

  • iPhone Air (eSIM-only globally)
  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17e

Can store up to 8 eSIM profiles and use 2 simultaneously. Mainland China versions of the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max retain physical nano-SIM only — the iPhone Air and iPhone 17e are the exceptions.

iPhone 18 Pro & iPhone Duo (2026)

The current flagship generation. The foldable iPhone Duo has no SIM tray at all and is eSIM-only in every market. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are eSIM-only in the US and the other eSIM-only markets, and keep a nano-SIM slot elsewhere — including New Zealand.

  • iPhone Duo (eSIM-only globally)
  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max

Can store up to 8 eSIM profiles and use 2 simultaneously. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and second-generation iPhone Air are not expected until 2027.

Both the 2020 and 2022 iPhone SE models support eSIM alongside a physical nano-SIM, despite their lower price point.

  • iPhone SE 2 (2020)
  • iPhone SE 3 (2022)

The original iPhone SE (2016) does not support eSIM.

iPad Models

Many modern iPad models support eSIM for cellular data. Note that Wi-Fi only iPad models do not have any SIM support.

  • iPad Pro 11" (1st gen 2018 and newer) — cellular models
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd gen 2018 and newer) — cellular models
  • iPad Air (3rd gen 2019 and newer) — cellular models

  • iPad (10th gen, 2022) — cellular models

Always purchase the "Wi-Fi + Cellular" variant — the Wi-Fi only model has no SIM hardware. Since 2024 the cellular iPad Pro (M4 and later) and iPad Air (M2 and later) have dropped the nano-SIM tray entirely and are eSIM-only in every market.
